In re: Forget Wal-Mart and McDonalds, its Sysco…

No need to boycott them really, just that if you were say against the homogenization of America, or the constant spiral to low prices (both a good and bad thing you may say), but we often forget about Sysco, the company that is behind the scenes providing for our almost every meal out at a restaurant.  You may have noticed them around, and if you did its for a good reason they dominate the business of wholesale food supply.

“A hot dog from Yankee Stadium. Potato latkes from the Four Seasons in Manhattan. Sirloin steak at Applebee’s. The jumbo cheeseburger at the University of Iowa Hospital. While it would seem these menu items have nothing in common, they’re all from Sysco, a Houston-based food wholesaler. This top food supplier serves nearly 400,000” (Slate – How Sysco came to monopolize most of what you eat)

I hadn’t known that much about Sysco, and I guess I don’t have much of an opinion on them, it seems that they provide the whole gamut of products, including french fries that are apparently good enough for Bouchon, Thomas Keller’s restaurant to use, to premade meals that ‘lesser’ establishments can heat and serve – which is probably the main downside there is to it, as its likely more and more places are using prepared foods without your knowledge, but hey if its cheap you probably don’t care…
