Did Antonella Barba get a raw deal on American Idol?

Unfortunately, I posted this too late. Antonella was just voted off American Idol. I felt a little sorry for her. Here’s why:

There’s a website called “Vote for the Worst” at http://www.votefortheworst.com. The site campaigns for people to vote for the worst singer on American Idol. This year, the website has designated Antonella Barba as the worst. You can see her profile here: http://www.americanidol.com/contestants/season6/antonella_barba/.

Antonella doesn’t have a great voice, but she’s already drawn a lot of media attention from photos of her that surfaced on the Internet showing her in provocative, scantily clad photos. In a previous season, American Idol threw one contestant off the show for posing for an adult website. This time, however, the show has done practically nothing (except bask in the controversy).

I hate to be cynical about this affair, but I kinda suspect that the American Idol producers have secretly welcomed the attention (both good and bad) that Antonella Barba has drawn to the show. After all, do the show’s producers actually want us to believe that the judges selected her for the final 12 women for her voice? Simon Cowell keeps on criticizing her voice as being no comparison to most of the other singers. But, of course, Cowell was one of the judges who selected her to be one of the 12 female finalists in the first place. I can’t believe that, in all of America, there wasn’t another female contestant with a stronger voice. The judges, including Cowell, knew what they were doing: they selected Antonella for her looks and whatever publicility she might draw. My suspicion is that the American Idol judges want a few people who, quite frankly, are not as good as some of the other singers. It’s good for ratings, after all, to have a few people whom websites like “Vote for the Worst” can talk about.

  1. I agree that the show has benefited from and probably enjoyed the attention that Antonella got, but I wanted to comment on an angle that I don’t think you addressed. I know some people disagree, but I think there is an important distinction between Antonella and the other Idol contestant with nude pictures based on the fact that Antonella’s pictures were done privately (she wasn’t paid) and were released without her permission – while the former idol contestant posed for money and public consumption. Personally, I don’t think either one should have been kicked off for the pics, but if the show has problems with nude photos, it makes sense that they would have a bigger problem with someone who took the pictures for money and with the knowledge that they would be made available to the public.

  2. Television selecting their personalities based on looks and not actual talent? NO!! IMPOSSIBLE!!

  3. you should not have voted antonella out! that was a great mistake!

  4. Bring it on Simon, he is so cutting sometimes but great to watch better than Paula.
